A moving\r\nhymn was sung, and the text followed: “I am the Resurrection and the\r\nLife.”\r\n\r\nAs the service proceeded, the clergyman drew such pictures of the\r\ngraces, the winning ways, and the rare promise of the lost lads that\r\nevery soul there, thinking he recognized these pictures, felt a pang\r\nin remembering that he had persistently blinded himself to them always\r\nbefore, and had as persistently seen only faults and flaws in the poor\r\nboys. The minister related many a touching incident in the lives of the\r\ndeparted, too, which illustrated their sweet, generous natures, and the\r\npeople could easily see, now, how noble and beautiful those episodes\r\nwere, and remembered with grief that at the time they occurred they had\r\nseemed rank rascalities, well deserving of the cowhide. The congregation\r\nbecame more and more moved, as the pathetic tale went on, till at last\r\nthe whole company broke down and joined the weeping mourners in a chorus\r\nof anguished sobs, the preacher himself giving way to his feelings, and\r\ncrying in the pulpit.\r\n\r\nThere was a rustle in the gallery, which nobody noticed; a moment later\r\nthe church door creaked; the minister raised his streaming eyes above\r\nhis handkerchief, and stood transfixed! First one and then another pair\r\nof eyes followed the minister’s, and then almost with one impulse the\r\ncongregation rose and stared while the three dead boys came marching up\r\nthe aisle, Tom in the lead, Joe next, and Huck, a ruin of drooping rags,\r\nsneaking sheepishly in the rear! They had been hid in the unused gallery\r\nlistening to their own funeral sermon!\r\n\r\nAunt Polly, Mary, and the Harpers threw themselves upon their restored\r\nones, smothered them with kisses and poured out thanksgivings, while\r\npoor Huck stood abashed and uncomfortable, not knowing exactly what\r\nto do or where to hide from so many unwelcoming eyes. He wavered, and\r\nstarted to slink away, but Tom seized him and said:\r\n\r\n“Aunt Polly, it ain’t fair. Somebody’s got to be glad to see Huck.”\r\n\r\n“And so they shall. I’m glad to see him, poor motherless thing!” And\r\nthe loving attentions Aunt Polly lavished upon him were the one thing\r\ncapable of making him more uncomfortable than he was before.\r\n\r\nSuddenly the minister shouted at the top of his voice: “Praise God from\r\nwhom all blessings flow—_sing_!—and put your hearts in it!”\r\n\r\nAnd they did. Old Hundred swelled up with a triumphant burst, and\r\nwhile it shook the rafters Tom Sawyer the Pirate looked around upon the\r\nenvying juveniles about him and confessed in his heart that this was the\r\nproudest moment of his life.\r\n\r\nAs the “sold” congregation trooped out they said they would almost be\r\nwilling to be made ridiculous again to hear Old Hundred sung like that\r\nonce more.\r\n\r\nTom got more cuffs and kisses that day—according to Aunt Polly’s varying\r\nmoods—than he had earned before in a year; and he hardly knew which\r\nexpressed the most gratefulness to God and affection for himself.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG16PT5FGQBC7SHFJMN1N523","peer_label":"CHAPTER XVII","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QZ8KK7RGEGSNTB5534","peer_label":"tom_sawyer.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG16T80WZ7YZMHVS8FW1N7A6","peer_label":"Chunk 1","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:27:12.177Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:27:12.922Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
