He had suffered it\r\nthere for more than a month, and his condition seemed serious enough to\r\nremind even his father that Gregor, despite his current sad and\r\nrevolting form, was a family member who could not be treated as an\r\nenemy. On the contrary, as a family there was a duty to swallow any\r\nrevulsion for him and to be patient, just to be patient.\r\n\r\nBecause of his injuries, Gregor had lost much of his mobility—probably\r\npermanently. He had been reduced to the condition of an ancient invalid\r\nand it took him long, long minutes to crawl across his room—crawling\r\nover the ceiling was out of the question—but this deterioration in his\r\ncondition was fully (in his opinion) made up for by the door to the\r\nliving room being left open every evening. He got into the habit of\r\nclosely watching it for one or two hours before it was opened and then,\r\nlying in the darkness of his room where he could not be seen from the\r\nliving room, he could watch the family in the light of the dinner table\r\nand listen to their conversation—with everyone’s permission, in a way,\r\nand thus quite differently from before.\r\n\r\nThey no longer held the lively conversations of earlier times, of\r\ncourse, the ones that Gregor always thought about with longing when he\r\nwas tired and getting into the damp bed in some small hotel room. All\r\nof them were usually very quiet nowadays. Soon after dinner, his father\r\nwould go to sleep in his chair; his mother and sister would urge each\r\nother to be quiet; his mother, bent deeply under the lamp, would sew\r\nfancy underwear for a fashion shop; his sister, who had taken a sales\r\njob, learned shorthand and French in the evenings so that she might be\r\nable to get a better position later on. Sometimes his father would wake\r\nup and say to Gregor’s mother “you’re doing so much sewing again\r\ntoday!”, as if he did not know that he had been dozing—and then he\r\nwould go back to sleep again while mother and sister would exchange a\r\ntired grin.\r\n\r\nWith a kind of stubbornness, Gregor’s father refused to take his\r\nuniform off even at home; while his nightgown hung unused on its peg\r\nGregor’s father would slumber where he was, fully dressed, as if always\r\nready to serve and expecting to hear the voice of his superior even\r\nhere. The uniform had not been new to start with, but as a result of\r\nthis it slowly became even shabbier despite the efforts of Gregor’s\r\nmother and sister to look after it. Gregor would often spend the whole\r\nevening looking at all the stains on this coat, with its gold buttons\r\nalways kept polished and shiny, while the old man in it would sleep,\r\nhighly uncomfortable but peaceful.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG16NYVHQRGV4P5P1JZH804F","peer_label":"III","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QM71M0G20X5B9DHB1X","peer_label":"metamorphoses.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG16Q0YYHCTERE6D02SWA1VR","peer_label":"Chunk 2","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:25:26.823Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:25:28.226Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
