At first he moved it\r\nbecause, with no other room free where he could crawl about, he was\r\nforced to, but later on he came to enjoy it although moving about in\r\nthat way left him sad and tired to death, and he would remain immobile\r\nfor hours afterwards.\r\n\r\nThe gentlemen who rented the room would sometimes take their evening\r\nmeal at home in the living room that was used by everyone, and so the\r\ndoor to this room was often kept closed in the evening. But Gregor\r\nfound it easy to give up having the door open, he had, after all, often\r\nfailed to make use of it when it was open and, without the family\r\nhaving noticed it, lain in his room in its darkest corner. One time,\r\nthough, the charwoman left the door to the living room slightly open,\r\nand it remained open when the gentlemen who rented the room came in in\r\nthe evening and the light was put on. They sat up at the table where,\r\nformerly, Gregor had taken his meals with his father and mother, they\r\nunfolded the serviettes and picked up their knives and forks. Gregor’s\r\nmother immediately appeared in the doorway with a dish of meat and soon\r\nbehind her came his sister with a dish piled high with potatoes. The\r\nfood was steaming, and filled the room with its smell. The gentlemen\r\nbent over the dishes set in front of them as if they wanted to test the\r\nfood before eating it, and the gentleman in the middle, who seemed to\r\ncount as an authority for the other two, did indeed cut off a piece of\r\nmeat while it was still in its dish, clearly wishing to establish\r\nwhether it was sufficiently cooked or whether it should be sent back to\r\nthe kitchen. It was to his satisfaction, and Gregor’s mother and\r\nsister, who had been looking on anxiously, began to breathe again and\r\nsmiled.\r\n\r\nThe family themselves ate in the kitchen. Nonetheless, Gregor’s father\r\ncame into the living room before he went into the kitchen, bowed once\r\nwith his cap in his hand and did his round of the table. The gentlemen\r\nstood as one, and mumbled something into their beards. Then, once they\r\nwere alone, they ate in near perfect silence. It seemed remarkable to\r\nGregor that above all the various noises of eating their chewing teeth\r\ncould still be heard, as if they had wanted to show Gregor that you\r\nneed teeth in order to eat and it was not possible to perform anything\r\nwith jaws that are toothless however nice they might be. “I’d like to\r\neat something”, said Gregor anxiously, “but not anything like they’re\r\neating. They do feed themselves. And here I am, dying!”\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 6"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG16NYVHQRGV4P5P1JZH804F","peer_label":"III","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QM71M0G20X5B9DHB1X","peer_label":"metamorphoses.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG16Q0YXB8F1G2ZVEX439TYR","peer_label":"Chunk 5","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG16Q0ZAC8MEFVHC3DYD7ZSY","peer_label":"Chunk 7","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:25:26.597Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:25:28.190Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
