They do feed themselves. And here I am, dying!”\r\n\r\nThroughout all this time, Gregor could not remember having heard the\r\nviolin being played, but this evening it began to be heard from the\r\nkitchen. The three gentlemen had already finished their meal, the one\r\nin the middle had produced a newspaper, given a page to each of the\r\nothers, and now they leant back in their chairs reading them and\r\nsmoking. When the violin began playing they became attentive, stood up\r\nand went on tip-toe over to the door of the hallway where they stood\r\npressed against each other. Someone must have heard them in the\r\nkitchen, as Gregor’s father called out: “Is the playing perhaps\r\nunpleasant for the gentlemen? We can stop it straight away.” “On the\r\ncontrary”, said the middle gentleman, “would the young lady not like to\r\ncome in and play for us here in the room, where it is, after all, much\r\nmore cosy and comfortable?” “Oh yes, we’d love to”, called back\r\nGregor’s father as if he had been the violin player himself. The\r\ngentlemen stepped back into the room and waited. Gregor’s father soon\r\nappeared with the music stand, his mother with the music and his sister\r\nwith the violin. She calmly prepared everything for her to begin\r\nplaying; his parents, who had never rented a room out before and\r\ntherefore showed an exaggerated courtesy towards the three gentlemen,\r\ndid not even dare to sit on their own chairs; his father leant against\r\nthe door with his right hand pushed in between two buttons on his\r\nuniform coat; his mother, though, was offered a seat by one of the\r\ngentlemen and sat—leaving the chair where the gentleman happened to\r\nhave placed it—out of the way in a corner.\r\n\r\nHis sister began to play; father and mother paid close attention, one\r\non each side, to the movements of her hands. Drawn in by the playing,\r\nGregor had dared to come forward a little and already had his head in\r\nthe living room. Before, he had taken great pride in how considerate he\r\nwas but now it hardly occurred to him that he had become so thoughtless\r\nabout the others. What’s more, there was now all the more reason to\r\nkeep himself hidden as he was covered in the dust that lay everywhere\r\nin his room and flew up at the slightest movement; he carried threads,\r\nhairs, and remains of food about on his back and sides; he was much too\r\nindifferent to everything now to lay on his back and wipe himself on\r\nthe carpet like he had used to do several times a day. And despite this\r\ncondition, he was not too shy to move forward a little onto the\r\nimmaculate floor of the living room.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 7"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG16NYVHQRGV4P5P1JZH804F","peer_label":"III","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QM71M0G20X5B9DHB1X","peer_label":"metamorphoses.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG16Q0ZR8G0TVJTXZWSH99FY","peer_label":"Chunk 6","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG16Q0YSHZKC6R2K727YZC7N","peer_label":"Chunk 8","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:25:26.560Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:25:28.192Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
