Even if it\r\nwas cold, she would stay at the window breathing deeply for a little\r\nwhile. She would alarm Gregor twice a day with this running about and\r\nnoise making; he would stay under the couch shivering the whole while,\r\nknowing full well that she would certainly have liked to spare him this\r\nordeal, but it was impossible for her to be in the same room with him\r\nwith the windows closed.\r\n\r\nOne day, about a month after Gregor’s transformation when his sister no\r\nlonger had any particular reason to be shocked at his appearance, she\r\ncame into the room a little earlier than usual and found him still\r\nstaring out the window, motionless, and just where he would be most\r\nhorrible. In itself, his sister’s not coming into the room would have\r\nbeen no surprise for Gregor as it would have been difficult for her to\r\nimmediately open the window while he was still there, but not only did\r\nshe not come in, she went straight back and closed the door behind her,\r\na stranger would have thought he had threatened her and tried to bite\r\nher. Gregor went straight to hide himself under the couch, of course,\r\nbut he had to wait until midday before his sister came back and she\r\nseemed much more uneasy than usual. It made him realise that she still\r\nfound his appearance unbearable and would continue to do so, she\r\nprobably even had to overcome the urge to flee when she saw the little\r\nbit of him that protruded from under the couch. One day, in order to\r\nspare her even this sight, he spent four hours carrying the bedsheet\r\nover to the couch on his back and arranged it so that he was completely\r\ncovered and his sister would not be able to see him even if she bent\r\ndown. If she did not think this sheet was necessary then all she had to\r\ndo was take it off again, as it was clear enough that it was no\r\npleasure for Gregor to cut himself off so completely. She left the\r\nsheet where it was. Gregor even thought he glimpsed a look of gratitude\r\none time when he carefully looked out from under the sheet to see how\r\nhis sister liked the new arrangement.\r\n\r\nFor the first fourteen days, Gregor’s parents could not bring\r\nthemselves to come into the room to see him. He would often hear them\r\nsay how they appreciated all the new work his sister was doing even\r\nthough, before, they had seen her as a girl who was somewhat useless\r\nand frequently been annoyed with her. But now the two of them, father\r\nand mother, would often both wait outside the door of Gregor’s room\r\nwhile his sister tidied up in there, and as soon as she went out again\r\nshe would have to tell them exactly how everything looked, what Gregor\r\nhad eaten, how he had behaved this time and whether, perhaps, any\r\nslight improvement could be seen. His mother also wanted to go in and\r\nvisit Gregor relatively soon but his father and sister at first\r\npersuaded her against it. Gregor listened very closely to all this, and\r\napproved fully.
