So they sat at the table and wrote\r\nthree letters of excusal, Mr. Samsa to his employers, Mrs. Samsa to her\r\ncontractor and Grete to her principal. The cleaner came in while they\r\nwere writing to tell them she was going, she’d finished her work for\r\nthat morning. The three of them at first just nodded without looking up\r\nfrom what they were writing, and it was only when the cleaner still did\r\nnot seem to want to leave that they looked up in irritation. “Well?”,\r\nasked Mr. Samsa. The charwoman stood in the doorway with a smile on her\r\nface as if she had some tremendous good news to report, but would only\r\ndo it if she was clearly asked to. The almost vertical little ostrich\r\nfeather on her hat, which had been a source of irritation to Mr. Samsa\r\nall the time she had been working for them, swayed gently in all\r\ndirections. “What is it you want then?”, asked Mrs. Samsa, whom the\r\ncleaner had the most respect for. “Yes”, she answered, and broke into a\r\nfriendly laugh that made her unable to speak straight away, “well then,\r\nthat thing in there, you needn’t worry about how you’re going to get\r\nrid of it. That’s all been sorted out.” Mrs. Samsa and Grete bent down\r\nover their letters as if intent on continuing with what they were\r\nwriting; Mr. Samsa saw that the cleaner wanted to start describing\r\neverything in detail but, with outstretched hand, he made it quite\r\nclear that she was not to. So, as she was prevented from telling them\r\nall about it, she suddenly remembered what a hurry she was in and,\r\nclearly peeved, called out “Cheerio then, everyone”, turned round\r\nsharply and left, slamming the door terribly as she went.\r\n\r\n“Tonight she gets sacked”, said Mr. Samsa, but he received no reply\r\nfrom either his wife or his daughter as the charwoman seemed to have\r\ndestroyed the peace they had only just gained. They got up and went\r\nover to the window where they remained with their arms around each\r\nother. Mr. Samsa twisted round in his chair to look at them and sat\r\nthere watching for a while. Then he called out: “Come here, then. Let’s\r\nforget about all that old stuff, shall we. Come and give me a bit of\r\nattention”. The two women immediately did as he said, hurrying over to\r\nhim where they kissed him and hugged him and then they quickly finished\r\ntheir letters.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 15"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG0KZ6MJCZ1CC0SJ3E2TW776","peer_label":"III","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QM71M0G20X5B9DHB1X","peer_label":"metamorphoses.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG0M2KQ30Y8KCDHZMBPB91Z8","peer_label":"Chunk 14","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG0M2KPY69S08RZA57KD6FQ1","peer_label":"Chunk 16","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-27T20:59:52.215Z","ts":"2026-01-27T20:59:53.466Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
