But as it is ...”\r\n\r\n“It’s got to go”, shouted his sister, “that’s the only way, Father.\r\nYou’ve got to get rid of the idea that that’s Gregor. We’ve only harmed\r\nourselves by believing it for so long. How can that be Gregor? If it\r\nwere Gregor he would have seen long ago that it’s not possible for\r\nhuman beings to live with an animal like that and he would have gone of\r\nhis own free will. We wouldn’t have a brother any more, then, but we\r\ncould carry on with our lives and remember him with respect. As it is\r\nthis animal is persecuting us, it’s driven out our tenants, it\r\nobviously wants to take over the whole flat and force us to sleep on\r\nthe streets. Father, look, just look”, she suddenly screamed, “he’s\r\nstarting again!” In her alarm, which was totally beyond Gregor’s\r\ncomprehension, his sister even abandoned his mother as she pushed\r\nherself vigorously out of her chair as if more willing to sacrifice her\r\nown mother than stay anywhere near Gregor. She rushed over to behind\r\nher father, who had become excited merely because she was and stood up\r\nhalf raising his hands in front of Gregor’s sister as if to protect\r\nher.\r\n\r\nBut Gregor had had no intention of frightening anyone, least of all his\r\nsister. All he had done was begin to turn round so that he could go\r\nback into his room, although that was in itself quite startling as his\r\npain-wracked condition meant that turning round required a great deal\r\nof effort and he was using his head to help himself do it, repeatedly\r\nraising it and striking it against the floor. He stopped and looked\r\nround. They seemed to have realised his good intention and had only\r\nbeen alarmed briefly. Now they all looked at him in unhappy silence.\r\nHis mother lay in her chair with her legs stretched out and pressed\r\nagainst each other, her eyes nearly closed with exhaustion; his sister\r\nsat next to his father with her arms around his neck.\r\n\r\n“Maybe now they’ll let me turn round”, thought Gregor and went back to\r\nwork. He could not help panting loudly with the effort and had\r\nsometimes to stop and take a rest. No-one was making him rush any more,\r\neverything was left up to him. As soon as he had finally finished\r\nturning round he began to move straight ahead. He was amazed at the\r\ngreat distance that separated him from his room, and could not\r\nunderstand how he had covered that distance in his weak state a little\r\nwhile before and almost without noticing it. He concentrated on\r\ncrawling as fast as he could and hardly noticed that there was not a\r\nword, not any cry, from his family to distract him. He did not turn his\r\nhead until he had reached the doorway. He did not turn it all the way\r\nround as he felt his neck becoming stiff, but it was nonetheless enough\r\nto see that nothing behind him had changed, only his sister had stood\r\nup. With his last glance he saw that his mother had now fallen\r\ncompletely asleep.\r\n\r\nHe was hardly inside his room before the door was hurriedly shut,\r\nbolted and locked. The sudden noise behind Gregor so startled him that\r\nhis little legs collapsed under him. It was his sister who had been in\r\nso much of a rush. She had been standing there waiting and sprung\r\nforward lightly, Gregor had not heard her coming at all, and as she\r\nturned the key in the lock she said loudly to her parents “At last!”.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 11"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG0KZ6MJCZ1CC0SJ3E2TW776","peer_label":"III","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QM71M0G20X5B9DHB1X","peer_label":"metamorphoses.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG0M2KPKVNE32KRAGFACKD8M","peer_label":"Chunk 10","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG0M2KQE1QW9DG6QPQ8D83R9","peer_label":"Chunk 12","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-27T20:59:43.565Z","ts":"2026-01-27T21:00:01.525Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
