You see that there\nis nothing particularly new in all that. The same thing has been\nprinted and read a thousand times before. As for my division of\npeople into ordinary and extraordinary, I acknowledge that it's\nsomewhat arbitrary, but I don't insist upon exact numbers. I\nonly believe in my leading idea that men are in general divided\nby a law of nature into two categories, inferior (ordinary),\nthat is, so to say, material that serves only to reproduce its kind,\nand men who have the gift or the talent to utter a new word.\nThere are, of course, innumerable sub-divisions, but the dis-\ntinguishing features of both categories are fairly well marked.\nThe first category, generally speaking, are men conservative in\ntemperament and law-abiding; they live under control and love\nto be controlled. To my thinking it is their duty to be con-\ntrolled, because that's their vocation, and there is nothing\nhumiliating in it for them. The second category all transgress\nthe law; they are destroyers or disposed to destruction according\nto their capacities. The crimes of these men are of course relative\nand varied; for the most part they seek in very varied ways the\ndestruction of the present for the sake of the better. But if such\na one is forced for the sake of his idea to step over a corpse\nor wade through blood, he can, I maintain, find within himself,\nin his conscience, a sanction for wading through blood — that\ndepends on the idea and its dimensions, note that. It's only in\nthat sense I speak of their right to crime in my article (you re-\nmember itbegan with the legal question) . There's no need for\nsuch anxiety, however; the masses will scarcely ever admit this\nright, they punish them or hang them (more or less), and in\ndoing so fulfil quite justly their conservative vocation. But the\nsame masses set these criminals on a pedestal in the next genera-\ntion and worship them (more or less) . The first category is\nalways the man of the present, the second the man of the future.\nThe first preserve the world and people it, the second move the\nyorld and lead it to its goal. Each class has an equal right to\ntxist. In fact, all have equal rights with me — and vive la guerre\neternelle — till the New Jerusalem, of course!\"\n\"Then you believe in the New Jerusalem, do you?\"\n\"I do,\" Raskolnikov answered firmly; as he said these words\nand dvu-ing the whole preceding tirade he kept his eyes on one\nspot on the carpet.","text_extracted_at":"2026-01-20T15:30:01.317Z","text_extracted_by":"pdf-processor","text_has_content":true,"text_source":"born_digital","uploaded":true},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KFCZZ05FKVDDMJJV3YE9Q4WH","peer_label":"crimepunishment00dostiala.pdf","peer_type":"file","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KESYJX0Z6XE0HWTS5N3SDG0B","peer_label":"The Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-20T15:30:02.071Z","ts":"2026-01-20T15:30:03.500Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFCZWTBNJH4WFMS8354919KY"}}
