A drunken soldier, smoking a cigarette, was walk-\ning near them in the road, swearing; he seemed to be trying to\nfind his way somewhere, but had forgotten where. One beggar\nwas quarrelling with another, and a man dead drunk was lying\nright across the road. Raskolnikov joined the throng of women,\nwho were talking in husky voices. They were bare-headed and\nwore CQtton dresses and goatskin shoes. There were women of\nforty and some not more than seventeen; almost all had black-\nened eyes.\nHe felt strangely attracted by the singing and all the noise\nand uproar in the saloon below. . . . Some one could be heard\nwithin dancing frantically, marking time with his heels to the\nsounds of the guitar and of a thin falsetto voice singing a jaunty\nair. He listened intently, gloomily and dreamily, bending down\nat the entrance and peeping inquisitively in from the pavement.\n\"Oh, my handsome soldier\nDon't beat me for nothing\"\ntrilled the thin voice of the singer. Raskolnikov felt a great\ndesire to make out what he was singing, as though everything\ndepended on that.\n\"Shall I go in?\" he thought. \"They are laughing. From drink.\nShall I get drunk?\"\n\"Won't you come in?\" one of the women asked him. Her\nvoice was still musical and less thick than the others, she was\nyoung and not repulsive — the only one of the group.\n\"Why, she's pretty,\" he said, drawing himself up and lookingat her.\nShe smiled, much pleased at the compliment.\n\"You're very nice looking yourself,\" she said.\n\"Isn't he thin though!\" observed another woman in a deep\nbass. \"Have you just come out of a hospital?\"\n\"They're all generals' daughters it seems, but they have all\nsnub noses,\" interposed a tipsy peasant with a sly smile on his\nface, wearing a loose coat. \"See how jolly they are.\"\n\"Go along with you!\"\n\"I'll go, sweetie!\"\nAnd he darted down into the saloon below.
