It had\nlately been moved to new rooms on the fourth floor of a new\nhouse. He had been once for a moment in the old office but\nlong ago. Turning in at the gateway, he saw on the right a flight\nof stairs which a peasant was mounting with a book in his hand.\n\"A house-porter, no doubt; so then, the office is here,\" and he\nbegan ascending the stairs on the chance. He did not want to\nask questions of any one.\n\"I'll go in, fall on my knees, and confess everything . . .\"\nhe thought, as he reached the fourth floor.\nThe staircase was steep, narrow and all sloppy with dirty wa-\nter. The kitchens of the flats opened on to the stairs and stood\nopen almost the whole day. So there was a fearful smell and heat.\nThe staircase was crowded with porters going up and down with\ntheir books under their arms, policemen, and persons of all sorts\nand both sexes. The door of the office, too, stood wide open.\nPeasants stood waiting within. There, too, the heat was stifling\nand there was a sickening smell of fresh paint and stale oil from\nthe newly decorated rooms.\nAfter waiting a little, he decided to move forward into the\nnext room. All the rooms were small and low-pitched. A fearful\nimpatience drew him on and on. No one paid attention to him.\nIn the second room some clerks sat writing, dressed hardly bet-\nter than he was, and rather a queer-looking set. He went up to\none of them.\n\"What is it?\"\nHe showed the notice he had received.\n\"You are a \"student?\" the man asked, glancing at the notice.\n\"Yes, formerly a student.\"\nThe clerk looked at him, but without the slightest interest.\nHe was a particularly unkempt person with the look of a fixed\nidea in his eye.\n\"There would be no getting anything out of him, because he\nhas no interest in anything,\" thought Raskolnikov.\n\"Go in there to the head clerk,\" said the clerk, pointingtowards the furthest room.","text_extracted_at":"2026-01-20T15:28:52.957Z","text_extracted_by":"pdf-processor","text_has_content":true,"text_source":"born_digital","uploaded":true},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KFCZZ05FKVDDMJJV3YE9Q4WH","peer_label":"crimepunishment00dostiala.pdf","peer_type":"file","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KESYJX0Z6XE0HWTS5N3SDG0B","peer_label":"The Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-20T15:28:53.849Z","ts":"2026-01-20T15:28:54.881Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFCZWTBNJH4WFMS8354919KY"}}
