He walked along the pavement\nhke a drunken man, regardless of the passers-by, and jostling\nagainst them, and only came to his senses when he was in the\nnext street. Looking round, he noticed that he was standing\nclose to a tavern which was entered by steps leading from the\npavement to the basement. At that instant two drunken men\ncame out at the door, and abusing and supporting one another,\nthey mounted the steps. \"Without stopping to think, Raskol-\nnikov went down the steps at once. Till that moment he had\nnever been into a tavern, but now he felt giddy and was tor-\nmented bya burning thirst. He longed for a drink of cold beer,\nand attributed his sudden weakness to the want of food. He sat\ndown at a sticky little table in a dark and dirty corner; ordered\nsome beer, and eagerly drank off the first glassful. At once he\nfelt easier; and his thoughts became clear.\n\"All that's nonsense,\" he said hop>efully, \"and there is nothing\nin it all to worry about! It's simply physical derangement. Just\na glass of beer, a piece of dry bread — and in one moment the\nbrain is stronger, the mind is clearer and the will is firm! Phew,\nhow utterly petty it all is!\"\nBut in spite of this scornful reflection, he was by now looking\ncheerful as though he were suddenly set free from a terrible\nburden: and he gazed round in a friendly way at the people in\nthe room. But even at that moment he had a dim foreboding\nthat this happier frame of mind was also not normal.\nThere were few people at the time in the tavern. Besides the\ntwo drunken men he had met on the steps, a group consisting of\nabout five men and a girl with a concertina had gone out at the\nsame time. Their departure left the room qixiet and rather\nempty. The persons still in the tavern were a man who appeared\nto be an artisan, drunk, but not extremely so, sitting before a\npot of beer, and his companion, a huge, stout man with a grey\nbeard, in a short full-skirted coat. He was very drunk: and had\ndropped asleep on the bench; every now and then, he began as\nthough in his sleep, cracking his fingers, with his arms wide\napart and the upper part of his body bounding about on the\nbench, while he hummed some meaningless refrain, trying to\nrecall some such lines as these:","text_extracted_at":"2026-01-20T15:28:52.931Z","text_extracted_by":"pdf-processor","text_has_content":true,"text_source":"born_digital","uploaded":true},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KFCZZ05FKVDDMJJV3YE9Q4WH","peer_label":"crimepunishment00dostiala.pdf","peer_type":"file","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KESYJX0Z6XE0HWTS5N3SDG0B","peer_label":"The Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-20T15:28:53.656Z","ts":"2026-01-20T15:28:54.803Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFCZWTBNJH4WFMS8354919KY"}}
